KANSAS CITY DEFEATS TORONTO IN EXTRA INNINGS
07/21/2010
It took ten innings for the duel between these two teams to come to an end. With a stellar performance by Alberto Callaspo, the Royals moved ahead, while the Jays sat in the dust. The game ended 5-4 after a grueling showdown.
Sometimes the guy with the worst luck brings home the win. It was up to Callaspo to finish it; deep in the 10th inning, he connected for the most important hit of the game. Both starters for both teams came to the game on Monday having not hit a ball in quite some time.
Well, he made up for it, driving home the tie-breaking run, the game was over, and the players finally got a chance to get some rest. It had been an awesome display of endurance. Both teams were so evenly matched, it was a lucky break that they were able to break a six game losing streak.
Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston was not pleased with the way his guys played. They ran the bases awkwardly, and it cost them several scoring opportunities. Taking chances when none were needed to be taken, and getting thrown out at was something that occurred more than once. He stated in a post game interview that if they had simply paid more attention to the plays, then the game would have had a different outcome.
The Royals had a solid performance at the mound, starter Kyle Davies, who is winless since a May 28 victory at Boston, gave up three runs on 10 hits in seven innings. He was credited with not allowing the Blue Jays many opportunities. As they say, prevention is half the battle, so not giving up any opportunities for the Jays to really get ahead was a good thing.
